@iris_meredith Like John Adams, in a way. It simply never occurred to him that the rest of the world was not driven by principle.

@iris_meredith Yeah. Europeans still do not really acknowledge their role.
As for Burke, well. I want to shit-talk him, cuz he was opposed to what I think, but I just can't, really. I mean, we're not spozed to say it, but I think he was actually a decent person.
So. If these rich white landowners -- many of whom owned slaves -- advocated this idea, this ideal, while not actually striving to make it in their own lives, does that mean the idea or the ideal are bad?
This vexing question is, allow me to speak freely, a vexing fucking question.

@randahl You say that, but I'm standing out there in the freezing rain barely keeping my cigarette lit by bending over and covering it with my head. :)
Cool conference, tho. I met one of Dijkstra's sons, outside, in the freezing rain. We shared a smoke and a hit of whiskey.
(You're not a computer geek, so you might not know who Dijkstra was, but trust me, he was a very major geek.)

@randahl When I was there, oh, thirty years or so ago, for a conference, I was struck most sharply by the fact that, being a smoker, I had to stand outside, and your poor benighted people had not actually been told about awnings.

@rollspelosofen Yes, and my point is that such deadlines are generally nonsense, measurable or not.

@grimalkina Okay, it's very old-school, but my wife got totally sucked in to "Dark Cloud".
She was tryna bond with the grandchild we raised, a completely admirable thing to do.
But she spent *hours* playing the game.
There was a boss fight, and she became enraged, and gee-kid Threy said, "Grandma, do you want me to take care of this?"
And she was like, "NO. Shut the fuck up."
Replying to @rollspelosofen@mastodon.nu
@rollspelosofen And have you ever missed a deadline before? If so, what happened?
Ya know, if you're a software geek, they have absolutely no clue what it is you do.
Consider doing nothing.
These fuckin' headlines.
"Far-left extends victory streak into Denver"
Far-left? Far-left?!?
Only billionaires think fair wages, reasonable healthcare, decent schools, and viable housing support are "far left" issues.

Looks like storms off and on all night here, so I may be intermittent.
The shower curtain is now properly clamped, and I'm not gonna take it off just cuz there's a lull.
Welllll, my computer table got somewhat more endampulated than is good for it. Everything seems to be okay.
Very strong wind came up, and I was tryna get the shower curtain over it, and a tree cracked really close, and it scared the shit outta me, so I did what any red-blooded patriot would do: I ran away.
