Hey #BikeTooter friends, some advice sought!

My front derailleur got busted somehow, appears to be bent, with a piece tearing off? It's jammed against my chain, and neither will move.

1) How big of a deal to repair this is it? I assume I need a new front derailleur and swap out the whole mechanism. (My trusted local shop closed last year, and the other one in town has bad vibes.)

2) Do I need any specialized tools beyond some hex wrenches?

3) What specifications do I need to look for in a replacement? Exact same model? Same # of gears? Something else?

(ok to boost, didn't post full public to avoid getting swept up in the hashtag)

Bike derailuer close up, it is roughly bent where the chain contacts it. There's a little piece of metal that appears out of place.

the Tourney is shimano's cheaper mountain bike line -- and I see from the picture the bike is a triple chainring. so you want a shimano-compatible 3x[?] mountain derailer where [?] is the number of cogs on the cassette.

can't see from the picture how this derailer mounts; that matters too. some have a clamp built in, some are bolted to a clamp, and some bolt straight to the seat tube.

regardless, the process is:
  • break the chain. it might have a quick-release link for this; if so, you need chain pliers, if not, you need a chain breaker tool.
  • remove the chain from the derailer
  • remove the derailer from the bike (tools: hex wrenches)
  • remove the shift cable from the derailer (tools: hex wrenches)
  • put the new derailer on (tools: hex wrenches)
  • put the shift cable (or a new cable) in the new derailer (tools: hex wrenches)
  • put the chain back on (tools: either a chain breaker tool (no quick link) or chain pliers (quick link))
  • set the derailer limits (either hex wrenches or (as in this photo) a small screwdriver)
  • ride bike
