#Mastodon tip: There is a way to use only part of a word as a hashtag!

For example, you might want to say the word “toots”, but use the hashtag “toot”.

To do this, place a U+2060 WORD JOINER before the “s” in “toots”. Example: #toots.

If you're using #X11 or #Wayland (i.e. #Linux or #BSD desktop), you can add the following line to ~/.XCompose to give yourself a keyboard shortcut:

<Multi_key> <w> <j> : "" U2060 # WORD JOINER

Then just type Compose, then W, then J.

When I was a kid, there was one time when I saw something online that I found really disturbing. I remember it to this day.

You know what I did? I went to my mom and showed her. We discussed the situation, ultimately decided we weren't going to worry about it, and that was that.

Kids aren't idiots and they certainly don't need to all be subjected to digital house arrest until they're 18. What they need is for their parents to be available—not overworked and exhausted.

And no, tobacco smoking isn't falling out of favor because it's illegal for kids now. That doesn't do squat; there is absolutely nothing stopping parents from giving cigarettes to their kids.

It's falling out of favor because Millennials decided smoking is cringe and stopped doing it.

If social media algorithm addiction is a problem, then that sort of cultural change is what will solve it, not the decree of some ham-fisted politician.

I see social media age verification is being justified using phony “science” about young people's supposedly-underdeveloped brains being uniquely vulnerable to addiction.

This is a myth. There is no such thing as a fully-developed brain. Adults are every bit as vulnerable. If they weren't, there wouldn't be a monstrously profitable underground market for gambling and narcotics.

But also, an old computer from a thrift store is a perfectly valid way to try #Linux.

It will be faster on newer hardware, obviously, but it should run nonetheless.

Fun fact: when I was a kid, I lived dangerously, and nuked my only PC's Windows 95 install and installed #Debian on it instead, having never used Linux before in my life. Ended up going back because I couldn't play games or use ICQ, but still, it was fun!
