I just spent 3 hours deciphering a junction box with 4 NM (Romex) cables and a light fixture, AMA. Turns out:
1) There’s a second light fixture paralleled across this one.
2) There’s a switch leg on the neutral, which makes my eye twitch a little.
3) The remaining NM is feeding at least one box elsewhere.
That doesn’t seem that bad, but a) the switch leg means white != white, and b) wire nuts max out at 3 conductors so the fixture also acts as a terminal block.

To be fair, the house *was* built in 1954, and code was very different then. Doesn’t make it especially friendly today, though.
@curtosis I shouldn’t be surprised that it would have been built with Romex, as that dates back to 1922, but I havr an older house with so much BX that the main panel looks like it’s getting fondled by one of those squid robots from the Matrix
