Quick question to the hive mind of experienced and NOT SO experienced photographers out there on the fediverse.

I'm about to make a very long video to talk about the kinds of things that someone might want to know if they were just starting out in photography. Imagine a relative gave you their old DSLR camera and some lenses, and you decided "yes this could be fun!"

What things would you want to know when starting out?

I had this conversation with someone a few years ago, and didn't make notes at the time. But it did inspire me to make a video today. I have a few ideas. But maybe some of my peeps would like to share their thoughts too?

@holger @ewen i was on the other extreme: i would get the fastest lens possible and always shoot wide open, even in broad daylight, to get the “sharpest” images free from motion blur and noise. i wish someone had told me about the reciprocal rule, the advantages of a deeper field, and how the exposure triangle is about balance and tradeoffs for different scenes, not picking a corner and sticking to it religiously
