Lex, my first company commander, was a proponent of a particular brand of fascist, Nietzschean ideology. He drew a clear distinction between ‘biological waste’ and ‘full-fledged human beings’. (…) He was, nevertheless, devout and would quote from the Gospel. (…) In March 2024, back in Moscow, my third company commander, Lis, showed me a video that Lex’s henchmen had recorded in Berdyansk. They had broken into a private house and were torturing a local family. Two of Lex’s henchmen were sitting on the sofa with their trousers down, whilst the husband and wife were performing oral sex on them. Lex himself watched the scene, reclining in an armchair in the style of Don Corleone and smoking a cigarette. The screaming and crying children were held nearby, forced to watch their parents being abused.

Tulenkov goes on to describe how Leks subsequently got a bit too carried away and began dealing in weapons, showing no respect for Kadyrov’s men. As a result, he was detained by the FSB, and whilst he was at it, they ‘pinned’ the Berdyansk case on him:

Lex, who until then had been squirming and writhing like a snake in a frying pan, suddenly pulled himself together; his voice grated like metal. “I was weeding out the Ukrainianness from these children. I was turning them into Russians.”

Tulenkov highlights, the sole reason for Lex arrest was him violating the internal rules of the Russian army system, that is illegal arms trading without a kick back for the commanders, and torturing one Chechen guy from “Akhmat” units.
