@n_dimension the effect of gravity applies with inverse square law for all those scenarios but as the scale increases the distance dwarfs the masses involved so the "free fall" is harder to visualize (for me). I still think of gravity as objects on a stretched sheet and the gravity well as the steepness of those slopes. At the galactic scale that fabric is "flat" and the solar system is a small hole, so how can a hole fall towards a flat surface? That's where my brain (intuition) breaks even though I understand theoretically how it works.
I think it really all clicked viscerally once I saw the animation of the sun traveling on a path and the planets constantly spiraling towards the sun but never catching up to it. It's wild!
