Mastodon relay protocol used LD signatures for this reason. Now we're replacing them with something that everyone can implement. There is a JCS implementation in Elixir: https://github.com/pzingg/jcs

Federated groups (FEP-1b12), conversation containers, nomadic identity (<-- this was the original reason I pursued embedded signatures)

@phnt @sendpaws The main reason is the same as with HTTP signatures: verification of a signature is much cheaper than a request.
