As a lifelong Canadian I must note that it is my experience that the "rowt" / rout pronunciation is about equally popular as "root", if not moreso.

I'm smack-dab in the middle of the prairies, though I lived in southern Ontario as a kid.

I grew up along the (bc) Canada/USA border. I think there was much focus on how we are different rather than how we are the same. I watched endless eye rolling over the pronunciation of words like route, roof, and map. 🤷‍♀️😁
