Finally, at a national level, we need changes in tax rules, and particularly VAT rules, to make it much cheaper to renovate older buildings in comparison to knocking them down and constructing new ones in their place, rather than the current systen which favours the construction of new buildings and penalises renovation projects.

The saga of Egyptian Halls is a key case study in how the current system for protecting the city's built heritage is simply no longer fit for purpose. Instead, we need a system which can move much faster to help preserve important buildings that are at risk of being lost. We also need a much better way of funding building preservation.

The recently revealed facade of the A-Listed Egyptian Halls on Union Street in central Glasgow. Designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, it was built in 1870. The upper floors have been largely empty since the 1980s and has been covered in scaffolding since the late 2000s. That was until the last few weeks, when it was removed so work could finally begin on restoring the building.

I love the way these windows 'climb' the internal stairs on Eastwood Parish Church on the Southside of Glasgow. Designed by Charles Wilson, this church was built in 1862.

Love this projecting stained glass fanlight above the entrance to the Hat-Rack at 144 Saint Vincent Street in Glasgow. Designed in an Art Nouveau style by James Salmon Junior, the Hat-Rack was built in 1899. I love the screaming head below the window, too!
