@Vocu What happened after the US civil war is an interesting case-study. I don't know precisely what to learn, other than that the US reconstruction did *not* work. The South lost the war, but won the peace. They were pushed back in the 1960s, an resurged from the 1980s on.
South Africa I know even less about, but "truth and reconciliation" in some form seems like a good idea.
