it is genuinely kind of exhausting to learn that the reason the cutscenes in Returnal were choppy the entire time i was playing was not in fact a stylistic decision, but because they're pre-rendered at 4k and downscaled in real time if you play at 1080p

4k being the default now for games is so fucking stupid. there's such a narrow selection of situations in which 4k is actually optically differentiable from 1080p
