@pettter well, just list the generally accepted masterworks in each art form: majority are from before copyright, funded through patrons or the state...

there's a subjective element here of course, but I think broadly it's true...

@glynmoody I don't think the subjectivity can really be sidestepped, nor the interplay between state, capital and what is 'generally considered'. In particular, I think you can just as (or more) easily make the same case for the greatest art being inspired and funded by the Catholic Church.

@pettter yes, definitely churches - and religious institutions in other cultures - played a huge part. that still support my point that it is not #copyright that has created most great art, however defined...
