Although a mountain bike set up for urban riding is a lot more practical, I really do like a road bike set up for touring more than a mountain bike (because you can get places a lot faster!). What I give up is the ability to go over bumpy sidewalks and over some gravel. Perhaps, maybe a wide tired gravel bike set up for touring (panniers etc.), but I haven't tried a gravel bike yet.
