Alex was a musician and so is his brother, so there was a short concert immediately before the Shiva. Their mother was a prominent piano teacher, so the quality of performance in the impromptu recital was extremely high. A cantor/opera singer flew out from New York.
One thing I like about Progressive Judaism is that there is flexibility in the tradition. We do a Shiva because its how things are done, but we can give a concert if it will help the bereaved.
Alex was politically active. I knew he was fighting for greater education access and funding, bit it turns out one of his causes was also climate change. His fight carries on....
