There is also a deeper analogy for what I keep hearing over and over from Black people: finding themselves surrounded by white people who either do not know, or do not care, about how America looks from the Black person's perspective.

German Nazis didn't wear masks because they were proud of being Nazis and thought it was a good look for them. Modern American Nazis know it is shameful and they don't want to face the consequences of their actions. Because they are cowards who can't stand for their convictions.

That's the only difference. They're still nazis.

Of course not. They know it's shameful, but they're not ashamed, they're cowards. Folks on the left go out and protest despite the danger. These cowards only show up when they think it's safe for them to do so, and they still hide their identities.
