One of the things that bothers me about Trump's Fourth of July airshow was that it rewrote the holiday exclusively as a celebration of military power rather than as a celebration of the country that power protects. It's fine to honor the sacrifices and accomplishments of our military, but that's not all there is for us to be proud of (or to critique and reflect on).

Even Soviet patriotic parades featured the occasional tractor.

to me, the part of the 4th i always treasure are amateur parades and the vast varieties of "traditional" holiday foods. both showcase the incredible diversity of our population, culture, and heritage. our house had ribs, japanese cole slaw, southwestern corn, german beer, italian dessert and i'm sure that every house on my culdesac had something different.

the attempt to narrow down the narrative and discard so much real history that doesn't fit their fascist/racist vision is infuriating. the fact that it ruined a major milestone (250) just makes it worse.
