From last September at Acadia National Park. They had been running rescue training exercises, so installed hardware had been flagged for the trainees. Apparently there are places in the park where visitors need rescuing frequently enough that they install things ropes can be hooked into. Generally speaking, if you see something this, do not go any closer to the edge!

@ai6yr They get a lot of visitors, it's a popular trail, and that granite is slick when wet. I suspect it's more that they don't remove them knowing they can use them again. I saw easily a half dozen along that stretch. There were probably more, but I wasn't going to leave the trail to look for them.
